Southside Shopping Centre is searching for a local artist to create a community inspired masterpiece and have their work displayed in the heart of Wandsworth.
The South West London retail destination is seeking a creative artist from Wandsworth to transform the brickwork at the centre’s busy throughfare at their West Entrance into a vibrant, colourful and welcoming new street art display space for local residents and guests of Southside to enjoy.
The open call is supported by Southside’s owners Landsec and Invesco Real Estate, and the successful artist will receive a £17,000 budget to bring their vision to life. The design should reflect a clear connection to the character and soul of the area and consider full design and installation methods of the mural.
The closing date for artists to submit their expression of interest is midnight on Monday 29th April. Shortlisted artists will each receive £700 to submit a proposed mock-up of their work with a detailed plan for implementation. The successful artist will be announced on Monday 29th July, with the work expected to be installed in Autumn 2024.
A flowing textile river, woven with recycled materials by hundreds of school children from 32 Wandsworth primary schools, will be exhibited at Southside until Wednesday 8 May.
Led by Royal College of Art Fashion Design graduate and artist Caroline Lauvetz, the project is inspired by Wandsworth's rich history of textile manufacturing along the Wandle River. Over 30 Wandsworth Primary teachers came together and joined Caroline for a series of sessions to learn weaving techniques to enable them to support their pupils from years 4 and 5 with creating their own textile artworks.
The children practiced weaving techniques on Wandsworth-sourced reclaimed fabrics to create an individual and unique piece of cloth. Each participating pupil's upcycled, woven cloth was joined together to create the textile river, which will flow through the exhibition space, referencing the Wandle's historic use of textile manufacturing and the current polluted rivers worldwide. Through the project, pupils have learned about the life cycle of a garment to understand the environmental impact of the current industrial systems in the fashion industry, and sustainable methods of consuming and manufacturing clothing.
