Dons Local Action Group, founded in March 2020 by three AFC Wimbledon football fans in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, focuses on addressing food poverty and other community challenges. Starting with food parcel collections at key locations in Wimbledon and Merton, the group quickly garnered widespread support, expanding its operations across Kingston, Merton, and Wandsworth. This grassroots effort demonstrated the power of community engagement in tackling urgent needs during unprecedented times.
Recognizing the digital divide exacerbated by the pandemic, Dons Local Action Group launched the 'Keep Kids Connected' campaign to provide laptops to children lacking access to remote learning resources. This initiative highlighted the group's adaptability and commitment to addressing multifaceted challenges beyond food insecurity. As the organization's scope broadened, partnerships with local aid organizations further enhanced its capacity to support vulnerable residents with essential items such as furniture and white goods.
In the summer of 2020, Dons Local Action Group solidified its commitment by establishing a formal leadership team and joining forces with the AFC Wimbledon Foundation.
